GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Bowater Inc. plans to close four of its Quebec sawmills to cut lumber production by 10 percent.
The Greenville-based newsprint and lumber products company said Monday that its Degelis, Lac-des-Aigles and Baie-Trinite sawmills will close Nov. 16. The Girardville sawmill is to close Nov. 30.
Georges Cabana, the company's Quebec spokesman, said that 215 workers will be affected by the sawmill closings.
``The reductions are being taken to compensate for soft lumber market conditions, wood supply constraints and penalties on lumber exports to the United States,'' said Pierre Monahan, president of Bowater's Canadian Forest Products Division.
Shares of Bowater were down 71 cents to close at $45.16 in trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
