    Will a cable/wire kill a limb if it is wrapped around the branch and over time disappears into the tree?

    Not every time, but yes it is very likely.

    What are you using the cable for?
    To pull the trunk up straight from leaning I put the cable through a piece of heater hose first.

    I've seen plenty of trees killed by wires through hose left on the tree... that will help the wire not cut into the tree, but needs to be removed within a year or two.
