Want to Buy Calipers, mics

My son started work operating CNC mills and lathes and is looking for his own measuring tools so he doesn't have to use the shop ones. He's on a Harbour Freight budget but I'm hoping to find him some better quality used tools. He said he needs digital calipers and manual micrometers from 1" to 6" in 1" increments. If anyone has extra stuff or sees some at a sale please let me know. I have saw parts or cash. Thanks.

Check Aldi's, they sell digital 1" for like $5 that are German made, not nice, but they work and you don't have to support China .

Not sure they have mics, I should have said that's for a set of calipers.

IMO he should buy a nice Brown and Sharpe or Starrett caliper to start with. They can be bought used, but make sure it looks nice and not beat up.

Once he has that, he should save for the mics. If he can use shop tools for now there is no good reason not to buy good quality tools that will last a lifetime.

Right now is not a good time to buy used however. The economy is doing quite well and most shops are not going out of business. When I was a machinist apprentice my boss bought a bunch of measurement tools- but that was in 08/09 when shops were going out of business. He bought a 72" Starrett vernier caliper for $600 and a set of 6" to 12" mics for $800. Oh and a CNC lathe with low hours fo $1700.
