Capitata Yew

We had two capitata yew shrub/trees, 16-18" tall. Both have started to yellow. We used Miracid on both. One has died. What is the proper care of this tree?

prefers moist, well-drained, sandy, slightly acidic soil
prune tolerant
sun or shade
pollution tolerant

The main liability is that it yellows in windswept sites

Can you protect it from the wind?
