My phone rings and someone says there in my driveway looking to pick up some pecan wood. I tell them I'm out of pecan and they say ok thanks. Then they drive to the back where my wood is stored and the guy gets out and grabs several "green" splits and starts to put it in his truck. I'm looking right at him out of my window. I go out there and say "can I help you" he replies "I just need a few pieces" I didn't think you would mind.
I said, I told you I was out and you just decided to help yourself and steal it? He puts the wood back and said, I didn't think you would mind if I took a few pieces.
Excuse me! I tell you I'm out so you trespass and try to steal from me anyway? I told him he'd best leave now before he regrets what he was about to do. I told him he was about to have a very bad day thinking he could just steal from me.
Then I pointed out the security camera that was pointed right at him and said '' you step foot on my property and I will know it" Then I told him not to come back, I'm not selling "any" wood to a would be thief.
He was an older guy, about in his fifty's. The nerve of some people.

I have no patience at all for people like that! This week I did a police line up on a guy that tried to break into a very expensive home we just completed. I caught him in the act and confronted him, just before he ran off he tried to convince me he was prying open the back door because he wanted to see the inside of the home. He says “it is for sale right”... then ran away. Police caught him on a looting charge and another breaking and entering besides my charges against him. But this is California, I’m sure he is out on the streets again.

It appears a lot of older folk have no problem stealing/shoplifting.

I may have shared the story before on here:

Back in the early 90’s when theft prevention devices were in their infancy, the local fleet supply started using them. Tons of the folks they caught were older people. We watched a proverbial “little old lady” shuffle through the security gate with stuff under her coat and just kept on going when all the alarms blew. Of course multiple employees went out and escorted her back in.

What sucks is.....a lot of these people have more money than they know what to do with it.....maybe....that's why they have it!

This is why I started only selling craigslist items that I can transport to a place other than my house to meet potential buyers. I also put locks on all of my outbuildings

I take the other approach. When people come meet me at my place the first thing I do is offer them a beer or a glass of water. People usually like that and make some kind of comment, whether or not they accept the offer. Then I say that "Craigslist is better with beer" and everyone laughs at that.

My theory is that a friendly guy who offers you a beer isn't gonna be the first guy you steal from. Maybe it's nonsense, but I've been doing it for several years now and I think it's been successful.

I do a similar thing - I pull out my Sig and offer them a belly full of lead or a straight deal. No one has ever cheated me either.

But then again, I've had a lot of incomplete sales and several bouts in jail.....

(just joshin', of course!:laugh: )

Somehow you make it to "It appears a lot of older folk have no problem stealing/shoplifting"? I see nothing in the write-up to indicate age. Since I don't know what your cut-off for older folk is I won't be directly offended (yet). Care to put parameters on this?

OP did say he was on older guy.

If you aren’t stealing from people there’s no need to be offended regardless.

He said the dude stealing his wood was an older guy. And I followed up with my story about all of the older people getting busted trying to shoplift at the hardware store.

What is older? 55 plus? Who cares.
