Chain Joiners

Hi all at AS,
Was going through some joiners (Oregon) today,they seem to be for 3/8 but they were too big to fit my stihl chain.
They are not .404.
I may have read a while back that some Oregon joiners only fit Oregon chain,is this correct?
I think these maybe fairly old joiners,not the latest ones.
