Yes, for some reason, on a bench, or next to/worked on a vice, parts sometimes just need a good WACK! Even though hard the oak won't bugger up the metal part. I keep some 1" plate steel handy when it needs real beating, but not quite on the anvil.

P.S. Rarefish, you must be a Mopar guy? My best friend has a 67 formula S 383, and a 70 440 4-spd, Dana, track pack.
Yep, 68 Formula S, 383, 4 speed, Convertible, second owner. I have a giant chunk of bronze that came off a train axle I use to beat on, it's a little softer than steel.

I built a 396/325hp using 396/375hp valve train. I stuck in a 63/ss impala that had a 409 in it. On the full body Dino she had 299hp at the rear wheels. That’s 400hp under the hood. Second run at the strip she turned 12.85. I had a borgwarner 4 speed with a low first gear, 4:88’s in the pumpkin. I forgot to turn the e fuel pump on. Couldn’t rev over 3,800rpm. Still ran 12:85. She needed 5:38 gears. Went through the traps too low of the rpms. A week later we put the car on the full body car Dino and she proved I needed to shift at 6,800 rpm. I wish I never sold the body. Using all stock gm parts. Back then the 396/375hp cam was $22.00.

My block was the SPHP 350 hi-nickle, 4 bt main w/windage tray. I had it bored 0.030 and decked, crank 0.010/0.010, balanced, and blueprinted by hand/me. Machine work done by same person who did the factory motors for Lotus, near Lime Rock Ct. New forged 11: 1 pistons. Crower valve train/cam. Colyes timing gears. Chevy Hi-volume oil pump. Eldebrock single plane, holley 4150, carter mech pump. Hooker 1 3/4" headers into duals w/crossover. Never got it painted, ran out of $$$ going back to school. Back then OEM fenders, from a friend at GM dealer were $98.00. Cheaper than working on a dent.

The 3:08 gears were fine in the 1/4, high 11s and 1 less shift. 3000 RPM on highway was 70 mph, gas mileage good. 4BBL didn't get active until ~ 4000 rpm, would turn 7000

It's in my barn, safe and dry.

Look up "Buckin Billy Ray" on YouTube. Probably the best videos and teacher for people learning how to hand file.
Buckin shares a lot of useful information in his videos, but it is well hidden in hours of talking :baaa:
This is by far the best chainsaw sharpening instructional video I've ever seen:

I sharpened my Oregon 59 .404 with a 1/4" file, had to go deep in the gullet but man it cuts nice! Anyone else do this? I don't know if it would work with modern. 404?
1/4”???
Are you shaping it to 3/8 hook or are you actually using a 1/4” hook?

Now mind you this is on a 088 magnum stihl so the big hooks don't really bog the saw, just wonder if anyone else has tried this shaped tooth?
