Save your money, your time, and your wood. If you have a few logs you want to mill you would be better off having someone do it with a portable mill.

A lot depends on how much wood he has to mill now, what he expects to mill in the Future, and if he just wants the Finished Lumber, or if he would ENJOY Milling.

CSM’ing can be an Enjoyable and Addictive Hobby (Expensive Too;):oops::innocent:) CSMAD, can be everything that CAD can be, and MORE

Telling many of these guys to “Just Hire Someone with a Portable Mill” is like telling them to just buy their Firewood, and have it stacked too

I would save a lot of money just buying my Salmon or Crab at the Store, but Fresh out River/Bay/Ocean is much Tastier, and More Fun

Uh, when’s dinner? Nice catch. I totally agree on all the factors you mentioned. I CMS and have hired out depending on what I want to do with the wood.

Ooopps, you missed the Dinner Bell on those.
Those were from the 2016 season, since we moved to the Mountain, we haven’t been fishing much, about 3 hours each way now rather than a bit over an hour, when we lived in Forest Grove

we are “Burning” our spring and summer Days wood cutting now a lot more than fishing

We Enjoy wood cutting, but firewood doesn’t Taste as Good as Salmon and Crab

our house has forced air Electric heat,which is a real budget buster, so we heat almost exclusively with wood. We burn an average of 10 Cords a Year.

Between Firewood and Milling, the saws have become a “Practical Hobby “, I Hope to eventually turn milling into an income hobby. I want to build some tables and furniture to sell. I have already sold some slabs, from just a local walk up, that saw some of my slabs, and wanted some for their own projects

Doug :cheers:

Chain saw is a best equipment, when we talk about a cutting trees or wood block. By the help of chain saw we can safe our time and easily cut block with fine cut.

Forget about the wood, lets go Fishing.

What was the final decision? Did you get the 3120?

I have the 661 & 394, and have ran both on and off my mill... 661 gets most of my all around use, the 394 stays on the 42" mill 95% of its time.
394;
-has better oiler than 661.
-slightly more torque IMO, but that's somewhat debatable.
-outboard clutch. some think this is desirable for milling due to heat, IDK personally.
I'm pretty new to CSM, and all I can say is adjusting changing chains is more difficult.
Not a game changer, as I said it performs very well on the mill when I keep a sharp chain on it.
:)
661;
-super good handling IMO.
-inboard clutch, easier changing bars on/off the mill.
-I sometimes swap it for my cheap 660 clone between slab cuts so they each get a break.
-tunes itself. I personally love my M-tronics, as I spend time in ohio, wv, and colorado frequently and use a saw in all three.
No retune for altitude or fuel, grab & go. whereas the 394 struggles at altitude & I have to make major adjustments even for only 3-3.5k feet elevation change.

just my 2c
