So what is the amount you would pay for a used oem 372xt in running condition above a total aftermarket kit saw. I would give a $100 more for the used oem, over aftermarket saw just for the crank and case quality. But that's just me and all opinions are welcome.

HL supply has a 372 kit shipped to me for $270.63. I have purchased several times from them without problems and received fast shipping.

Now for my test. Purchased this close to complete running 2014 372xt saw for $312, have purchased them as cheap as $125, but this saw could be put into service for under $10 right now. I will begin with a vacuum check of case and seals (hope it's good,or more money), remove cylinder and replace piston rings (Caber), replace fuel, impulse and filter, check tank vent, check or replace crank bearings, gaskets, re-vacuum check when assembled. If crank case bearings need to be replaced will use SKF. Will be trying to stay all oem, hoping to keep costs below $370, if aftermarket parts are used it will be noted. Know I could, have rings, bearings, lines and spare parts in my stash. But that would void my test, any parts needed will be shown and cost added into total cost. Wish me luck, trying to put my money where my mouth is.

I just bought a mess of ex tree service XTs from a dealer. Sold all but most of one saw. Refreshed bottom end, cleaned OEM cylinder, new meteor and cabers, re-built the rwj. Pretty much mechanically new top to bottom. I still have negative $$ invested. The saw paid me to build it. What you're doing can easily be done.

Found saws problem. Pulled oil pump bushing and crank seal came with it. Saw was clean, believe someone tried rebuilding it. Good thing they did not run it much if any, could not draw vacuum on case. All bearings are in great shape. Cylinder and piston have a few carbon marks, but no scoring or grooves. Parts needed, gasket and seal set, choke lever, air jet, rim sprocket, Caber rings, o-ring, impulse line, fuel line and filter. Lines are good, but I am already there. Will total cost at end. I’d never buy a Chinese saw regardless of the price

That's because there's no need for one in HI, and peeps who can afford HI can afford to walk into a dealership.

Piston is good. Rings loose, some carbon. Cleaned up nice. Will get new Caber rings. Cylinder carbon washed out with carb cleaner.

Could you post up a pic of the piston for peeps like me. I've never re-used one from a saw with an air leak or carbon marks/scoring and I've been curious about it. I've had a couple lately that were possibilities. And on that note, you're lucky with your carbon cleanup. Last one I did was caked on I had to wire brush, scrape, and scotch brite.

I would, but cylinder is already motosealed with oem gasket. Piston and cylinder are both smooth, zero scoring, just those gray/black stains.

A 372 if one even shows up on Craigslist here is north of 500 bucks. I also got enjoyment from building my own and trying to un**** the Chinese ****ery.

In this instance, a relationship with a dealer is priceless. They all have "junk" saws come through their shop. Who are they going to save them for? The guy that stops in twice a year, or the one that stops in a couple times a month, knows people by name, and throws the dealer some business?

I do not know about that, do not drink or smoke. May be that is what's wrong with me. In one picture you can see carbon stains on piston. Seals are in and cylinder on, new Caber rings, oem base gasket with Motoseal ( want to let the next guy know I was there). Opened stock muffler outlet a little as shown, will paint and reinstall screen. Let it cure overnight and finish tomorrow. Installed new fuel line and filter, also new tank vent outer plug. Tried to get a picture of Caber etching on ring, but does not show up.

Blue locktite on cylinder bolts, will also use on muffler bolts and oil pump bolts. Should have it running tomorrow. Friend dropped off a Stihl blower he needs repaired ASAP. I said if you need it ASAP, fix it yourself, it's just a hobby thing.
