chinese recoil assembly question.

I bought a Chinese saw off Ebay awhile back and has always had a weird recoil action. The rope pulls out a long way before engine turns over, like an impulse mag drive on old engines had.
Took recoil apart and has a second spring inside of drum that connects to clutch dog plate.
Has anyone ever replaced with a normal drive assy or modified to work like a standard recoil?
