I'd like to start climbing, but I'm not really sure where to start gearwise. Would it be better/cheaper to piece together my own gear, or to just buy something like the Entry level spur and rope kit from Wesspur? Any good resources to look at?
It's going to be recreational for now, but I definitely see removals in the future. I'm looking at a starting a degree in Urban Forestry next spring.
Is about 1000 dollars a reasonable number including basic climbing gear and a used saw?
Thanks!

Is this the kit you are looking at?

If so, it is the gear that the guy I climb for occasionally bought. No he does not like a single thing about it.

Also there is a lot of must haves not included in that. I think your budget is low, without including a chainsaw.

This is the one I was looking at, pretty similar, just a few more items. http://www.wesspur.com/climbing-kits/entry-level-combo-tree-climbing-kit.html
How much do you think a reasonable budget would be?

Helmet w/chinstrap, handsaw w/scabbard, saw lanyard

I'd spring for a kit that includes a nicer saddle. Your hips and thighs will thank you. Especially on the second day of climbing.

Aside from those items, do you think this kit is pretty complete? I might give Wesspur a call and see if I can swap out the saddle for something with better padding.
Thanks for the help, have a good night!
