A excavator damaged one of our trees with a bobcat. How can I help the tree, should I apply anything to it?

With a knife, cut the bark where it starts to separate from the tree, so you have a scar with solid bark around the edge. It's called bark tracing. Then just leave it. The tree will grow over the scar (in about 15 years). Trees are designed to do this.

Make sure the tree doesn't get drought stressed during the summer. Deep watering infrequently is better than a short sprinkle daily.

A layer of mulch around the tree is helpful as well, just keep it away from the stem.

And, while you have that knife out, find that contractor and.... wait, no, no, no. Better to forgive and forget. That's just my inner serial killer talking, again. I really need to just ignore the voices.
