Diseased maples

I have a couple of maple trees that were here long before purchasing this lot. They are showing a lot of spots and black residue all over, have what looks like a hollow split in the center and lots of dead branches.

Any idea what is going on here? I’m zone 3 in MN, and some images are attached.

The first pick probably started with some sort of physical damage, maybe even sun scald. Then a canker (likely fungal) disease attacked it. Harder to see what is going on in those other pictures.
