Does anyone know what kind of tree this is, it's in northern Vermont.

Agree that is Black cherry - Prunus serotina I learned it as the bark looks like burnt cornflakes.

Looks like some yellow birch or sweet birch in the background? Those may have some similar patterns in the bark, but will be much lighter in color and the smaller trees will be more "peely"
