I am looking for a leave that, when dry will make a crackling sound.
I prefer the leave not to break down or crumble.
Also must be non toxic to pets.
    Thanks in advance.

That crackling sound is the leaf crumbling...

What are you looking to do?

Oak leaves last a lot longer than many others...but still break down.

I'm thinking that perhaps the noisy leaves are an early warning system?

Sycamore leaves are good and crunchy...

If you're looking for something to put into a dog house to keep your dog warm, pine needles supposedly help keep fleas out...I usually buy straw, though, because it's hollow and therefore warmer.
