I bought an Eastern Redbud (already in bloom) in April, 1999. It did well that year and last. However, this year although there are plenty of buds, the tree seems dead. The buds just fall off if they are touched, and the wood seems brown. What happened?

It sounds like its dead, all right. What kind of a winter did you have? Was there warm spells that moved in fast while the ground was still frozen? In other words, I suspect the tree died from descication through the winter. Others?

It was a very cold and snowy winter (for us). I don't remember whether we went through up and down periods. What could I have done differently? And why are other Eastern Redbuds in the area doing at least OK?
