Ether with lubricant in it

In or on a saw? On a saw for cleaning, perhaps. Test a small area.
In a saw for cleaning & lubrication while it's running, I wouldn't.

What's your intended purpose?

Shouldn't need it. A clean oil can or something likewise with some fuel/oil mix for the chainsaw is all you may need to help get it running to diagnose or set the carb.

In vehicles that need an octane boost I use brake cleaner. Supposedly it's much easier on the engine than ether or starting fluid.

As Tom said a teaspoon of mix in the carb achieves the same purpose without the risk.

If your constantly using ether for starting either your carb idle screw is in too far giving it too much air, lean or your lo speed screw is out of adjustment.

Start the saw, warm it up, adjust the idle if it’s too high. Now turn in the low speed jet in till it almost stalls then back it out 1/2 turn. You might need to do this procedure a few times, lower the idle, turn the lo screw in.
