fence post near maple tree

I am installing a fence in my yard near a large maple. I have managed to get all the posts installed without running into a root bigger than my little finger, all except one that is. It is close to the threefoot trunk. I planned the post layout to avoid the large roots but I will need to cut a couple of roots to get this last post in. the biggest is around two inches in dia. Can I do this without harming the tree ?
