    why the hand pulling of the cable????

    Capstan winch. Pulling on the rope tightens it on the capstan to pull the load.
    Advantages are the winch is portable and you aren’t limited to the length of cable that is on a winch drum.

    I probably wouldn't bother with my winch if I'm pulling logs out of a pile on a road. Scenery looks a lot like the mountains up here in Wa.
