That place is in Norway of course - but nowhere close to here.

Here is a picture from a different angle:

That's the way I usually have done it on saws I know - unless it has a long bar on it, that I want to rest on a log or stump when starting the saw.

I know very well that it isn't "by the book" - but drop-starting isn't either, so WTF.....

As you likely know I don't do prayers, but I hope it turns out well. My best wishes for her!

Resting the mill end on a log is the only way I've got enough to start the 661 first time. After that it starts on the guide ladder all set to cut a slice off. So yeah WTF IMG_20180613_094844.jpg first time I have noticed roots such as these
    Wishing all better health

I don't use the chain brake when starting. Some of my older saws don't even have a chain brake.

Only a couple of my 30 or so saws have breaks, I hope that doesn't mean I can't start them. All of my Homelite 1050's start better with the throttle lock on, so they sort of rip when they fire up.

I’ve got a mac that will only start with throttle lock on or it floods to hell and back,

I don't personally use a chain brake when starting, and probably because If I am tuning the chainsaw, I can tell by the chain moving If the throttle or clutch speed is set correctly. However, when giving directions or If asked how to start a chainsaw, I try to give the same directions as those in the manual.

My Mac 550 starts easier with the throttle open. The Mac and Homelites, with the throttle closed will pop back and rip your fingers off. With the thottle open, they crank fairly easy, for 100cc saws with no decomp. Someone told me saws with reeds do that, still don't know why.

Got the call from Horsely Drilling that they will start either Friday or Monday. I asked for some pics of the rig doing its thing on all that hard granite.
Guy has 5 rigs & has a backlog of orders.
