Got some apple wood to check out what’s inside

Pulled it out of a back yard today with some help of a couple helpers, looks like it’s been there a while but not much bugs that I can see. I’ve done a couple apples and one had really nice red purplish color to it. Not really expecting that tho
Thinking about doing 1 big piece. Thickest I can get while getting the most width out of it. Maybe 5”-6” thick.

To me, it means it had very good growing conditions or maybe it's not apple. I have some large pieces I will check for comparison. Last time I saw rings that wide, it was Ailanthus / Tree of Heaven. Do you know what variety of apple it is?

Growth rings represent years of growth. Widespread like that means it grew a lot each year. So optimal growing conditions if that is not normal for the variety. Some trees naturally grow faster than others. Don't have a whole lot of experience with apple myself, so I cannot say as far as that goes. Looking forwards to seeing some slabs regardless of whatever it may be.

You probably get plenty of rain there, right? That would sure help. The pith is way off center and the wide rings are mainly on the one side - maybe facing the South?

Others have said it..... If you read those rings you would read long wet growing seasons... Does that fit the Portland OR area?... Yeah I think it does.
Long summer days... plenty of rain and or humid marine air.

I like what I found inside. Maybe it can be book matched. There 3” thick slabs at 5’ long
