Gum Balls and Galvanized Nails

Agh, Kind of out there, though....I heard if I took 6-8 inch galvanized nails and nailed them into the circumference of the tree, all the way around, it would stunt the ball growth, and not otherwise harm the health of the tree. Anyone actually Have First Hand Knowledge of this? Thanks!

The only thing I ever heard of for that purpose is a product called Snipper, but I have no experience or further information about it.
