Ok, well that was it. Took it apart and found that there was almost nothing left of the key and the crank slot was a little wallowed out. New fly wheel on the way (outch) pulled one off my buddy's saw and tried it, works great!! What a monster!!!

You don’t need a new flywheel. Using your buddies flywheel to help you, find the key center and mark it on the face. Then use a punch to make that mark permanent.

Then align with the keyway center on the crank (or a bit counter clockwise from center-which is even better) and torque it down after clearing the inside of the taper and the crank with some solvent to degrease it. Pull the nut when done to insure it stayed aligned, then retorque.

The key just lines up the crank for timing. The taper holds it put. Torque the nut to 26 ft/lbs.
 
The number tag leaves no doubt about when the saw (or really the case) was made. As always, parts may well have been swapped on older saws, either for OEM spares, aftermarket spares, or used parts from other saws.

This means that the saw is old enough that it (still) may have some particularly desirable parts inside it, like the HDA-87 carb and/or a Kolbenschmidt (KS) non-decomp cylinder?
There were other non-decomp cylinders used as well (Mahle and Gilardoni if memory serves) on early saws, but the KS somehow is regarded as the most desirable one.
 
Well the non decomp cyl. Is junk, groves all the way around it. It does have the HDA carb though

Most carbs used on the 262xp (if not all) were Walbro HDA - it is the -87 (as opposed to -120 or 144) that is particularly desirable, because it has a larger venturi than those used later.
