I have a need for a fall/arrest system for very amateur/home tree work. I also ahve the need to be able to sit back onto my harness with all of my body weight to make adjustment on the fly.

I initially thought I'd just use a prusik knot for the fall/arrest function, but I'm not sure if that would be appropriate for stopping mid climb and intentionally putting all my weight on the rope/harness.

Hopefully that makes sense. Any insight/tips?

A prusik loop works just fine, just test it first, I'm partial to a valdotian tres (sp?) but the good ole triple loop standerd prusik will work just fine.

Many Pro arborists climb on nothing more then a prusik.

But if your looking to spend some cash the Petzl ID works good too. Not real good for climbing with it, but its a dandy fall arrest/controlled decent device. (it can be used for climbing but its not as good as say a unicender or rope wrench for going up)
