So I have a beautiful red oak that shades my entire back yard. The tree is approximately 50" diameter at the base, unfortunately it splits into two trunks at about 5 feet. Poking around today it appears I can stick a 30" bar in between the two trunks where they merge. The cavity isn't large in diameter perhaps 6" at the top and tapers from there. I have also noticed water "bleeding" out of the lower part of the main trunk. The cavity is also full of water....which I siphoned out as much as possible.
What are my options for preserving this tree? Should I leave it alone as most trees in the woods don't receive any help to survive?
The good news I guess is that the two trunks don't split at much of an angle, perhaps 15 degrees or so however the tree is at least 30 feet tall.
