Hey Cincy your saw was made in Charlotte NC and per the serial number this is the information you requested.
3- assembly line it was made on.
8- 1978
079- March 20th
0162- the 162nd unit made that day.
So March 20, 1978 is DOM.

My first was the Red XL-12 in the 70's. I still have it and it still runs. I bought a Blue XL-12 for $70 three weeks ago that will out cut my red one.
They were powerful saws for there weight.

Yes on the XL but not sure about the 7 digit.

Clint, well according to Mrs. Wilson's records your Blue XL-12 is mid to late 1965.

I ran 3 tanks of gas through it today.
I think someone has been inside that saw. It's amazing how well it preforms. It makes my red XL12 seem sick.
