hot water heating system issue

We have an old hydronic heating system with owb. The issue is that even though the zone valve for the upstairs is closed the hot water that runs pasts it when the down stairs calls for heat is rising up and transferring heat to the the water in the lines upstairs and making it to hot. How do i stop the heat transfer through the closed upstairs valve?
