Cacao are pruned flush with the trunk (actually, the terminology for a cacao trunk is "chupon"). If not pruned flush, a mass of suckers is likely to sprout from what remains.

In WV you probably are not dealing with cacao trees, but now you know something new that will be of no particular value to you.
 
Nothing serious, just a difference of opinion with a neighbor. I told him to google Dr. Alex Shigo. The tree in question was a sweetgum.

Thanks for the responses. Interesting info on the Cacao. Next time I get to the Big Island, I might find it useful.
