    A special breed ...

From earlier this week. A cathedral redwood I hoped to photograph, and finally had time to cross the water. Got this printed 20 x 30 and framed it this afternoon.

A large coast redwood with near-zero taper. It's about 15 ft. dbh. This tree is part of the reason I chuckle about an "18 footer" list one other guy is assembling, who also explores in the redwoods. His thing is finding every 18 footer and bigger. But he excludes a 17' or 15' tree even if it's 50% larger by volume.

This tree is called the "Nitro Express" after the size and shape of a H&H .700 cartridge nitro_clrk_frks_14mdv.jpg

Enjoyed a few roads this autumn in the redwoods. This is in Humboldt Redwoods State Park from about a week ago. Taken with the Canon 5DS ...

Try stretching the browser window wide to enlarge ... seems more realistic.

For perspective, is that path wide enough for two people, or two cars?

That's Mattole Rd. and two cars can pass side by side. This photo was taken standing back, zooming with a 70-200mm to about 180mm. It can give a unique look to a road or scenery.

Yes, it's that road. That video is traveling east to west, so the photo I posted was taken near 6:30 in that video.

Autumn_2000.jpg Last week, the rain sure freshened the air and colors in the redwoods. This is a patch inside Jedediah Smith park.

I also enjoy pausing to look at the old stumps. This one is near Avenue of the Giants. Even the stump has a fragment of living cambium remaining.

    Nice photo.
It's a shame though, some people feel it necessary to carve graffiti into the wood.:(
