Husky 181 SE thin ring. New bearings and seals. Two new piston rings. New fuel line and carb kit. Starts, idles, cuts runs great. The bad- someone trimmed the bottom of piston skirts, so it free ports a little. Don't know how much, but a paper matchstick doesn't fit in the gap below the piston on exhaust side at TDC. One top cover screw looks like maybe it has a thread repair insert in, but not sure. All of them tighten down well enough. One of the oiler screws has been replaced with a longer screw since it didn't feel like the OEM one grabbed many threads. The new one goes in farther and grabs more threads and tightened down nicely. I can change out the piston to one from a 281 if the one in it scares you. I will get a picture of the recoil side tomorrow. I did a terrible job of getting it in the frame for the video, but at least you can hear it run. $250 PHO plus ship.

Forgot, top cover had cracks, fiberglassed resin and mat fixed them, and repainted with high temp gloss over orange for plastic.

yeah, I know, bummer someone messed with it. It doesn't seem to bother it in stock form, runs well. I didn't check the squish since I used a gasket, wasn't worried about any clearance issues. I only know the compression is over 150 with only about 5-10 minutes run time on the new rings. My gauge leaks down very fast after you get to 150, so i can't put it down and get a picture quick enough before it starts to lose air.

Agreed. I could always switch it out with the 281 piston I have and delete the base gasket, but then it would lose that thin ring magic.

Thanks for the bump, might have something worked out for this saw, should know in a day or two.

Nothing set in stone yet. I did add a deflector with a screen today. Thought I had some high temp paint to finish it off, but can't find it, so I will add a new pic once that is done.

Here are some pics of my muffler deflector and screen addition. I welded a nut inside the muffler to hold the screw for the screen. Who ever buys it can choose the mod I did, an unmolested muffler with all OEM deflectors in place, or one missing the deflector, a blank slate ready for your own mod.
