Husqvarna 61 chainbrake assembly

Anyone feel like chiming in here about any tricks to get this back together? The mechanism is extremely stiff and I can’t get the brake to pivot as soon as I put the cam pin in. I’ve searched for videos online and found one about a 55 but it’s not the same. This is a circa 89/90 era saw. I had taken it apart to replace the sheet metal spring that slides into the “nose” of the assembly area on the side cover. Snapped one of the forks off already.

Check HLSupply. I had to rebuild mine and used their AM Part #: H60266. It worked.

It's a complicated mechanism. Sometimes it is easier to just replace it. Good luck!

It’s really not that complicated; it has three different springs, a cam pivot, and a pin. The trick is the positioning putting it back together. I’m fishing for info from anyone who has mastered the positioning & order of assembly, which is particular to the successful reassembly.

Appreciate it, but that doesn’t show anything other than an exploded parts view. There’s no information about order of assembly. That’s why pics of an assembled piece would show more than even this does.

This video has been my go to trying to assemble this brake. Unfortunately, I can’t really see enough of the positioning of that coil spring he jams up in there to know if I got mine right.

In the handle. It looks like he just stuffs it up in there but I can see a ledge and specific molding in my handle. I’ve tried it many ways and I can’t get the click or the actual mechanism to operate.

These brake assemblies are very touchy to put back together on the 266 and 394`s I have built, compressing the main big spring back into its recess was the most difficult, I made my own tool and it made it a bit easier.

Look inside here and see that the curved leg of the spring goes under the cam pin. The straight leg of the spring points straight up.

I think I would remove the cam pin, insert the spring, then replace the cam pin while holding the spring down in place.

Doesn’t the pin have to go thru the hole in the knee joint? Which actuates the brake?

No, the pin pushes on top of the knee joint to release the brake, and pushes the little tab at the end of the knee joint forward to activate/trip the brake.

The pin basically rides on top of the knee joint.
