I have a white top 61 that a friend gave me. I read on this forum that the tag gives the date of manufacture like this: YWWXXX. The serial # is 053219. I see 1980, 53rd week. Doesn't make sense.

I can't get the picture to rotate. Sorry

Can anyone tell me when this 61 was made?

TIA,

Bob

Yes you are correct in 1980. The 61 came out in late 1978ish with white top. Silver side tag gives it a way as early one too. early 61's have single air filter screw, later switched to two. should also have two piece ignition system. Chain brake was optional in first few years. Same chassis as the 266 and Yugoslavian built 66.

It is as you describe. I have an early 266SE with a metal fuel tank and the two piece ignition. It was a great saw and part of my firewood arsenal until the ignition failed.

I'll take more pictures of the 61 this weekend. It needed a fuel line and a carb kit. Fired right up.

The ignition parts are still available aftermarket. I had a 66 but sold it. I have always wanted to find a 266. They are the hottest of the early two piece ignition saws. I grew up running 61's they where my dad's favorite when he logged. He had many of them through the years.

I have a Husqvarna 61 also and tring to get the manufacture date. Mine has hot hand white top. Serial number is. 057974 silver tag. Can anyone please help me out. Thanks.

Im not 100% sure on the silver tags, but i know the black tags from 87-96 followed that format. Could be that the silver tag saws just did the year as the first digit and the serial of the saw that year as the rest of the #? @SawTroll

The format ywwxxxx wasn't used before some time in 1984, with "silver" tags from 1984 up to and including 1986 - then with black tags from 1987 to 1996 + with the full year also on the tag from 1997 to around week 17 or so in 1999 (yyyy ywwxxxx).
No 6 digit numbers were on a similar format, like ywwxxx.

From some time around 1981/1982 to some time 1984 the full year also was on the tags, but the serial numbers themselves had no "codes" that I know of in them.
Before that there were different systems on the "silver" tags in use, including the one on your saw. All I can say about that particular tag is that it likely is from no earlier than 1978, and no later than 1981/82 (I don't know exactly when the system changed).

A way to get closer to the production date is to remove the top end and look at the lobes of the crank. On one of them there usually is a number that tells the production month and year of the crank.

It could well be from 1980, but the serial number in question doesn't mean that it is, and there are other options (see post above).

The 6 digit numbers aren't "decodable" in any way that I know of - they likely are just consecutive numbers, possibly for a given batch (or something like that). What else does it say on the tag?

I don't have the saw handy but it's the same as this one. Just the large numbers are the 057974

What I thought - then the 6 digit number contains no code that can be used to date the saw (unless exact factory records can be found, which hasn't happened so far, to my knowledge).

I'm having to rebuild the saw and I'm seeing many parts available for the 61's would they have changed much over all the production years. I'm also thinking about doing an upgrade on the cylinder and piston to the 50mm bore.

Yes, there has been many "updates" on the 61 (that still is in production after about 40 years) - and the newer parts some times will not be a "bolt-on" for older saws without other changes coming with it.
This also has an impact on which larger top-ends are simplest to upgrade to on a given 61 - including which other parts need to be replaced at the same time as the top-end.

I'm not going to get to crazy with the mods I still want a good dependable firewood saw. I'm going to check the bearings out see how they are and go to the larger cylinder and piston. Everything else can stay the same. Nothing to radical.

Have a converted 61/272 with a Hiway P/C. Very strong saw!

Have the 61 husqvarna trying to work out the year of it 1420430. 1981 or 1991
