The agave dies after flowering and this is where the name 'century plant' comes from. They have to be very mature to flower.

I've got a dozen of so in the yard. I had two very large ones and they both flowered a couple of years ago and promptly died. There are hundreds of small plants on those flower stalks.

Here is a short video of the bee activity on agave. The bees are quite intense.
