I have this cherry tree that is about 6 years old. It was doing great until about 2 years ago. We had an invasion of those gypsie moths this year too. Leaves started falling off and started growing branches from the ground. There is a pretty severe split on the trunk about 7 inches long and about a 1/4 inch wide. Also tiny holes at the base. It’s in the middle of the yard so if it has to go I’d like to plant another one there. Did I plant this thing to deep??
Thanks for the help guys!!

Best bet would be to call a local arborist for an inspection, but I'd say you probably won't ever be happy with that tree now. It may end up bearing fruit some years down the road, I watched a cherry tree that had been hit by lightning and split, then wrapped in bailing wire to hold it together, recover enough, over 10-15 years or so, to finally have cherries, right before it was removed. If it was me, I'd remove it, get rid of the stump, and have an arborist plant a new one.
