Hi, I have a fairly large tree next to my house that I've noticed some rot in. Is this definitely beyond repair and ready to be cut down? Or should I have an arborist look at it?

You can see my 3.5in knife sunk into one spot.

Just from the pics, my gut feeling is not to remove. Seek advice from a good arborist. You can clean up the wound by gently pulling off loose bark exposing the callus tissue.

Pretty good lean away from the house. Which direction from the house is that?

There is good response growth. Have it looked at. Expect to pay for an evaluation...don't call the biggest "we remove trees" ad. I can already give you their answer. If you don't know who to call, look for somebody with a Tree Risk Assessment Qualification.
