Just saw a show on the Science Channel about a competition in Japan where they use Japanese style Damascus planes to see who can shave the thinnest strip of wood. The winner’s strip, about 3’ long was only 3 microns thick. That’s only .000118”!!!!!
 
I saw that also , or something similar but it might have been on You Tube , they really get into that competition . I read some where that old school Japanese master carpenters frown upon the use of abrasives to finish wood and rely on the use of finishing planes to put the final touches on a wood working project . It is a skill I don't have for sure.
