Hello:
In the Northeast, we have just had a couple of very cold nights after the
leaves started to come out on my Japanese Red Maples. It was right around 32
degrees at night and around 70 during the day. The leaves on the trees have
all shriveled up and it looks as if they are dying. What should I do to help
them come along? I also have a question in planting some small trees I
received from a neighbor. He stated he received them from an arborist club.
They are either ASP or something like that. Maybe Aspen trees. He stated
they were hard wood trees. The trees just have bare roots, and no root ball.
Will they grow if I plant them?

Some trees have the ability to activate dormant buds in the event the primary buds are killed by frost or eaten by critters. I suspect the J. Maple has the same ability.

Regarding the bareroot seedlings - if they are poplar or aspen, they will more than likely survive and grow quickly to become a rather large tree. Give careful consideration to where you plant them. Keep at least 25 feet from a structure and avoid planting them over your sewer pipe as poplar roots seek plently of water.
