Zooming in on the two photos, looks to me like the problem is there is no substantial root system on 3/4 of the tree... the area on the other side of the fence/property line, where the ground appears to be at least 1' lower than the yard the tree is in... and is that a brick retaining wall I see under the fence to the right of the tree?

My huge hickory tree was also sitting on a mound above ground level, roots severed on one side by highway and utility work, who knows how long ago.
Want to see what your tree will look like after a good storm? Only, I was lucky this time, it fell across the highway and into a field. Where will your fall?
