I have a 19-inch diameter, 25-year-old live oak that is two feet from the concrete pool deck and six feet from the outside of pool wall. The pool wall is 12 inches thick gunite concrete. The tree has begun to lift the 4-inch thick concrete deck the past three years. The deck is now an inch above the pool's stone coping nearest the tree and is somewhat lifted for 15 feet along the pool coping.
Before the roots tear up my deck, I am wondering if there is a way to save the tree without filling the pool with dirt. I'm thinking I would have to cut out a section of pool deck and dig and pour a concrete root barrier wall between the tree and pool, but that may be too much root cut for the tree to handle. The main patio between the tree and the house, which is also very close to the tree, hasn't lifted much, if any, probably because the roots have room to roam under the patio.
Any ideas? View attachment 761185 View attachment 761185
