Dont know that it necessarily served any purpose other than to make it look different and recognizable in a sea of chain brands. Pretty old stuff at this point. Late 50s into the early-mid 60s I believe.

If you look at the chain going around the sprocket, that "pin tail" sticks up a bit and would help keep the following cutter from tanking a too aggressive bite and reduced the potential for kick back. It does not interfere with the action of the chain on the bottom or top of the bar.
