Last year one of our condo residents planted 2 maple trees about 12 feet in height between 2 buildings in our complex. Some of our resident owners are concerned that these trees will grow to be too big for the area chosen and may damage foundations. They are about 10 feet from one building and 15 from another. The gentleman who planted them claims they are "miniature maples" and will not grow too big. They are definitely not Japanese maples as I can recognize that type. Is there a species of maple that remains short and compact?

Most maples grow to tree size. Maples are not hard to identify as to species. Species will give you growth potential. They can dominate an area of 35'x35', and more if you count the shade effect. Good or bad depends upon your point of view.

I have cut silver and red maple trees that were damaging foundations. Each were 30" + in diameter - Smaller trees to 20" should not cause concern at those distances.
