Ok so I got 2 x 024av supers for $50. One with crush damage to handles and plastics, the other with a blown crank.
So I made one good runner out of both. But it was very lazy.
So I decided to turn it into a 026.
I got a really nice 026 barrel and new Meteor piston with Caber rings. Replaced the small end bearing and mains/seals with genuine still bits.
I widened the exhaust port by 2mm total and the intake by 2mm as well. Then flowed the intake tube and muffler the the barrel. I also matched the case to barrel and widened the boost ports at the bottom of the barrel.
Next came a muffler mod.
Then I set the squish. It came out at 0.78mm, i thought this would be ok.
I plan to take 0.20 off the key to advance the timing. But i have done this yet.

Should I upgrade the carb? It is a stock 024 super carb

Swap in a 194 carb, the Venturi is bigger. Here in the US, they are around $45. The China equivalents are OK if that’s all you can get, but the air inlet tends to be smaller and the quality isn’t the same.

Tighten squish up to .5mm if you can. We use SAE measurements here, so as tight at .015 inch with be ok on that saw.

Advance the timing by .025 inch off the key.

Thanks mate.
Just ran its first full tank through it and let it cool down.
Did another comp test and it's come up to 150psi already. I am hoping for more after 5 or 6 tanks of fuel.
I advanced the timing by removing 0.020inc from the key. That seemed to give it some torque.
So far, (porting, advanced ignition, muffler mod, ect) I am very impressed with the power.

As for the carb, i dont know for sure, but i figured a carb from a 028 would be slightly bigger than my 024 carb. My 024 carb is a fully adjustable Tilotson (see pics above)

Ok, after 3 mins run time on new top end, compression at bang on 145 psi

Not bad about what I figured as it may increase some. The China cylinders you would have gotten maybe 130. The OEMs new around 160-170. Thanks for posting the info. Good looking saw as I totally rebuilt an 024 last year. I had a used OEM piston/cylinder that did around 155 compression.

The cylinder is a OEM Stihl 026 with a new Meteor piston kit and Caber rings. So maybe it will come up some more. Let's hope

Did another full tank today. I also started to lean her out a bit. WOW it has some power. I cant believe my lazy old 024 super goes so hard now.
Just waiting for it to cool down completely so I can do another compression test.
I still think there is more to come. Especially with a bigger carb and MS260 air filter.

Ok,
1 full tank down since the rebuild and the compression has already jumped from 145psi to 155psi.
Still hoping for more.
Here are the measurements for my stock Tillotson 024avs.
