Soaking axes with timber handles in water is never a good idea, as by doing so, the timber is weakened. If the implement is wedged properly with a timber wedge followed by one or more small metal wedges, it will never move. A little application of boiled linseed oil to prevent any moisture from getting into the handle wont do it any harm either.
