So I am buying a new saw that has been sitting on the shelf since 2018. I imagine that any oil that was in the cylinder and in the crankcase has settled to the bottom by now. Do I risk scoring the piston trying to fire it up? Should I pour some 2-cycle oil in the cylinder and the crank case before trying to start it? Or am I making much ado about nothing?

2018 isn't a long time at all-that's practically new as far as I'm concerned haha. Heck, many saws sitting at some of my local dealers are older than that.

Unless it was sitting outside since 2018 I can't see any reason to do anything but gas and go. However, if it puts your mind at ease you could do a few shots of fogging spray or a touch of pre-mix.
