I have an 039 and an old 180c cylinder I want to clean up with paper and acid, but neither look like my 260 which I know is nikasil coated, but I have been told both are. My question is, was there a specific start date that Stihl started plating their cylinders with nikasil? Also can you sand chrome bores?

Good questions. I was always under the impression that you can not “sand” a Chrome lined bore but you can “clean it up” with a mild scotch pad material.

So the true answer is you CAN sand a chrome bore ?

Obviously depending on the shape it is in?

Personally I don't use acid anymore to clean up cylinders.

I ruined a good cylinder with acid once so since then I only use sandpaper to clean them up.

Sand paper has never failed me yet.
