OK, I will start off the Hotsaw Hall of Fame with Paul Bunyon. Paul did not have a hotsaw, but he had a big hot axe. The hotsaw of his day. He and his blue ox, named Babe, were so big that their footsteps created Minnesota's ten thousand lakes. Paul and Babe dug the Grand Canyon by dragging his axe behind him. They also created Mount Hood one night by piling rocks on top of their campfire to put it out. :blob2:

When I was a kid there used to be huge carved Paul Bunyon on Highway 26 between Portland, OR and the coast. No longer there... dunno what happened to it. Now, on to the Hotsaw Hall of Famers in the post-axe era. Welcome to Arboristsite...

There was a big pair in Bemidji, a smaller pair in Park Rapids IIRC, and I want to say that Brainerd may have had a pair at one time too. Those towns were not alone, that was a common theme in the Minnesota "woods" towns in the 60s and 70s when I was a kid. Dad had a particular fascination with them for some reason.

Paul and Babe

To see one of the better Statues of Paul and Babe go to "treesofmystery.net"
Trees of Mystery are off Hwy. 101 Redwood Coast Highway in the Redwood National Forest N. CA. For the "State of Jefferson" does he feel that the Redwoods should be in Jefferson State?

The state of Jefferson definately includes most of the coastal redwoods. Not the ones south of Mendocino County though. The official map of the 51st State of Jefferson includes these California and Oregon counties:

I protest! You left Sutter County (just south of Butte County) off of your map. More conservatives per square mile than we get credit for. Please amend your map :greenchainsaw:

Sorry, not my map to edit. Just the State of Jefferson maps from the Jefferson web site with counties that were included in the 51st state attempt. Actually it would have been the 49th state before WWII. It was during WWII that the last attempts were killed off to create the state by protest and otherwise.

Maybe you can bring the issue to be included in Jefferson with your local politicians in your county there? XX :biggrinbounce2:

Okay. Makes sense, kinda. We own some ground in Butte County, too...I guess that might qualify. As far as bringing any of our local politicians into this...first I'd have to explain everything to them....in about four different languages. County Commissioner meetings here sound like a methamphetamine fueled fire drill at a Berlitz language school. Anglo, Hispanic, East Indian, and a token Okie, and they all hate each other. Maybe leaving Sutter County out of Jefferson wasn't such a bad idea after all. ;)

The true West Coast home of Paul Bunyon and Babe is Westwood, Plumas County, CA. They came West from Ackley Minn. with the Red River Lumber Co. around 1900.

Paul and Babe in Westwood CA

According to historians, Paul and Babe came to an end of their logging days at the Red River Lbr. Company in Westwood, California in the early 1910's. The Red River mill operated 9 headrigs, employed 10,000 workers and it soon became one of the largest sawmills in the "world." Those who lived in the company owned town were furnished with houses, streets and sidewalks that were steam heated from the "Power House" and paid in script. If your interested in the history of logging go to steaminthewoods.com.
