Planting trees using gopher baskets

Can I plant a 5 gallon pepper tree using a 15 gallonTree size gopher basket? I planted a pine tree using one and now I'm thinking this is why this tree hasn't grown in 5 years. Are the 15 gallon tree sized gopher baskets not designed for large trees? I may be in for a day of transplanting some trees. Ugh!

Wish I knew what you meant by a gopher basket. Just dig the hole about twice the circumference of the tree but the same depth. Throw it in the hole and make sure the root flare is above the soil level. Water as needed.
