Hello... I have a Stihl MS 261 I acquired that I am pondering what to do with. It has no spark and compression seems low. I am wondering what it would be worth to sell so I would consider offers, I am also considering either rebuilding it myself or having it rebuilt. So, open to offers or suggestions.
thanks !

Hi,
Welcome to AS! I may be interested in the saw. The only way I'd know what kind of offer to make is if you'd pull the muffler and show piston pictures from through the exhaust port. It depends how bad the piston is scored(maybe it isn't). It may also help you decide whether you want to attempt fixing it.
On a side note, offer threads don't usually seem to go well. There is another website that specializes in auctions if you aren't sure of pricing. That being said the saw looks like it would clean up nice. If it ran, oiled like it should, chain brake worked and it was a nice clean saw I'd say it's probably worth around $375 plus or minus $25.
Have a great day,
Lee

Are you interested in fixing stuff?
If you don't have a lot invested and you want to fix something, that saw would be a great project for you.
Once running that is a pretty good all around saw.
Start a thread and you will get lots of help in diagnosing and fixing it

Thats pretty good, I have 2013/15 MS261's I paid $550ish when new. $375-$-$400 means after 5 years of daily punishment there still worth 70+% of new price. If that's anywhere near correct, that's amazing! Like very amazing.

There's 026s going for $300-350 around here so I thought a little more for a really nice MS261. If it is a pro Stihl around here it's automatically worth at least $100 even if it was crushed by a tree. People pay ridiculous amounts for them. Trust me, I wish they were worth a little less around here, hard to find a fixer upper for a decent price.
Huskies will sit on Craigslist for weeks at really reasonable prices.
There's a Husky 50 for $75 that's been on Craigslist and FB marketplace for about a month. Says it runs good but it has an epoxy repaired gas tank.
Just my local experience.
Thanks,
Lee
