When putting a screwdriver in the slit of the bushing, don't drive the screwdriver straight in. Put it in at an angle and you don't have to spread it very far or as you experienced, it will break 180 degrees from the slit. Put the sprocket onto the shaft and then the bushing. Then pull the sprocket onto the bushing and line up the holes. Have a straight edge handy and when you tighten the bushing, the sprocket will come towards you about a 1/4". Then use the straight edge to make sure the sprockets are aligned. You will have to play with it a little to make sure they're aligned. My mechanic uses a 3 pound hammer to move it in if need be. This is hard to explain without showing you here at our shop. You may want to look on Youtube and see if there is a video showing how to install a taper loc bushing to a poly chain sprocket.
