I have four of these... under $30 when they're on sale at Menards. Bought the first one just for this kind of stuff, because they are so cheap. Surprisingly, a couple of years later, it still hadn't burned up. I loaned it to my father-in-law for a bathroom remodel project he was working on, and he cut miles of drywall, bathroom tile, trim boards and even some of the flooring up with it. They were on sale for $23 at Menards one day, so I bought three more of them, figuring I'd probably burn them up quickly cutting roots and stuff with them. Nope. They're all still working.

I have a much more expensive one, but these cheap single-speed ones work fine for whacking away at roots. If it does go up in smoke, you aren't out much cash. You'll spend more on blades than the tool costs.
